Three parts of the soul

  1. Nous - the head, reason
  2. Thumos - the chest, spirited part of the soul, trained emotions. This is what ties the man together to make man man.
  3. Epithumia - the belly, where desires and passions lie

The nous cannot overcome the epithumia without the thumos.

  • Phaedrus - Plato likens the chariot and charioteer with the three parts of the soul
  • The New Republic - they’re like a creature made up of three different creatures.
