Plato
Nous
- the head, reason
Thumos
- the chest, spirited part of the soul, trained emotions. This is what ties the man together to make man man.
Epithumia
- the belly, where desires and passions lie
The nous cannot overcome the epithumia without the thumos.
Phaedrus
- Plato likens the chariot and charioteer with the three parts of the soul
The New Republic
- they’re like a creature made up of three different creatures.
